What is One At A Time Therapy (OAATT)?

One At A Time Therapy (sometimes called Single Session Therapy) is a focused, single-session approach designed to help you move forward with a specific issue, decision, or situation.

It’s not about digging endlessly into problems or analysing your past.
It’s about helping you see clearly, access what’s already working, and take a step forward.

In each session, we work with your existing strengths, patterns, and resources to find practical ways forward - often creating the kind of clarity or shift that gets things moving again.

This way of working is based on a simple principle of stepped care, used across the NHS Mental Health Service:

Start with the least intrusive, most effective support first.

Many people don’t need long-term weekly therapy to make meaningful change.
Often, a single well-focused session is enough to:

  • unlock a decision

  • shift perspective

  • resolve something that’s been looping

  • or help you move forward with more confidence

If you need more support afterwards, you can always choose to return or move into ongoing work.

But you don’t have to commit to that upfront.

Why Start Here?

What kind of issues is OAATT suited for?

One-At-A-Time-Therapy works particularly well for:

  • a specific problem or situation you want clarity on

  • feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or caught in loops of overthinking

  • a decision you can’t quite land on

  • wanting a fresh perspective or new direction

  • building on strengths and solutions that are already there

It draws strongly on solution-focused and narrative approaches - meaning we focus on:

what you want, what’s already working, and how to build from there.

This format is not designed for deep, ongoing trauma processing work involving:

  • long-term relational patterns

  • dissociation

  • or regulation skill-building over time

That kind of work usually benefits from regular, consistent sessions and a deeper therapeutic relationship, which is what the Ongoing Therapy service is for.

If that kind of work is what you need, I can support you with Ongoing Therapy or help you find a service that is a better fit.

Just focused support, as and when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from a OAATT session session? A focused, structured 50-minute session centred on what you want help with right now. We'll clarify the issues, look at what's already working, and find a practical way forward you can take with you.

Is a OAATT session just one session? Yes and no. It’s designed as a one-off session, and your commitment is just for that one appointment - to help you get unstuck and moving again. Think of it as pay-as-you-go therapy: you use it when you need it, rather than committing to a regular weekly contract of sessions. If it’s helpful, you can always come back for another session in the future, or step into ongoing work if that feels more appropriate.

Will a OAATT session solve all my problems? Probably not - but it often helps more than people expect. Most people already have strengths, insight, and coping ability. One focused session can often provide enough clarity or traction to help you move forward on your own (hello, lone wolf). If I think you’d benefit from longer-term support, I’ll let you know - without any pressure or obligation to continue.

How do I choose between OAATT and Ongoing Therapy? Trust your own sense of what you need. If you want immediate support for a specific issue, decision, or situation with no ongoing commitment, OAATT is usually a good place to start. If you already know there are deeper, longer-standing patterns you want to work through over time, Ongoing Therapy is likely the better fit. If you’re unsure, you can start with OAATT and decide from there.

Can I have a OAATT session even though I'm on the waitlist with the NHS? Yes. OAATT can offer helpful interim support while you’re waiting for longer-term therapy elsewhere, and it won’t affect your place on an NHS waiting list.

If I want to go on to Ongoing Therapy afterwards, do I still need to book the Deep Dive Consult assessment beforehand? Yes. The Deep Dive Consultation (for Ongoing Therapy) allows us to look more fully at your history, patterns, needs, and goals so that any ongoing work is properly tailored and supportive.

Do I really have to complete the questionnaire beforehand? The session can still go ahead without it, but I strongly recommend completing it. It helps you clarify what you want from the session and allows me to prepare so we can make the best use of our time together.

Which system do you use for online work? All sessions are now offered online via Zoom. I don't use any other online system. You’ll receive a secure link after booking. You can join via your browser or the Zoom app (the app tends to work best). Please make sure you’re in a private, confidential space where you feel comfortable to speak openly.

I had Ongoing Therapy with you before a while ago and need a bit of help again, is it okay to book a OAATT session? Yes. OAATT is a flexible option for previous clients who want a focused check-in or a reset.

Do you offer in-person sessions? No - this service is now online only.

Why is OAATT priced differently to Ongoing Therapy? The standard fee for a 50-minute session is £150. Ongoing Therapy works on a different pricing structure due to the regular commitment and continuity involved.

Why is there a cancellation fee even if I cancel in advance? OAATT sessions are offered as one-off appointments and are not part of a rolling weekly schedule. When you book, that time is set aside specifically for you. Because these sessions are offered in a limited and intentional way, it is often not possible to reallocate the time at short notice. For that reason, a 50% fee applies to cancellations made with more than 72 hours’ notice, and the full fee applies within 72 hours. This helps protect the time that has been reserved and allows the service to remain sustainable.
