FAQs
1) Therapy and how I work
My work is integrative and humanistic, which means I don't follow a single therapeutic model or predetermined programme.
I draw on different theories and approaches depending on what is happening for you and what seems useful. These can include somatic and trauma-informed approaches, Solution Focused Therapy, attachment theory and other psychological perspectives.
The starting point, however, is you - rather than trying to fit your experience into a particular model.
Somatic therapy brings the body into the therapeutic conversation. Alongside thoughts and emotions, we may pay attention to things such as physical sensations, breathing, posture, movement or changes in your nervous system.
My work is online and does not involve physical touch. Because seeing some of the body can be useful in somatic work, I may sometimes suggest adjusting your camera position so that I can see more than your head and shoulders.
You remain in control of what we explore, and you don't have to do anything that doesn't feel right for you.
Solution Focused Therapy is an approach that pays particular attention to what you want to be different, what is already helping, and the strengths, resources and possibilities that may be available to you.
I draw on Solution Focused ideas where they are useful rather than using them as a fixed programme. Sometimes understanding how something developed matters; sometimes it is more useful to look at what you want next and what might help you move towards it. Often there is room for both.
Therapy with me is collaborative, curious and responsive. There isn't a predetermined programme to follow, and I won't assume that I already know what you need.
We might explore your history, notice patterns, pay attention to what happens in your body, experiment with something different, or simply create enough space to think properly about something that has become difficult to see clearly from inside it.
There isn't a predetermined number of sessions.
Some people find that the work they want to do takes months; others choose to work for considerably longer. We'll pay attention to whether therapy continues to be useful to you rather than deciding at the outset how long you should need it.
Humanistic integrative psychotherapy draws on several different therapeutic approaches rather than asking you to fit into one particular model.
My work is informed by person-centred therapy, Gestalt, attachment theory and ideas from object relations. Although these approaches differ, they share an interest in how we develop through our relationships with other people, and how those experiences can continue to shape the way we understand ourselves, relate to others and move through the world.
Being integrative means I can draw on different ideas depending on what is useful for you, rather than applying the same theory or technique to everyone.
The humanistic part is equally important: I see you as a whole person with your own history, circumstances, strengths and ways of making sense of your life.
Therapy therefore isn't about me deciding what is wrong with you or telling you who you should become. We work together to understand what has shaped you, what may be happening now, and what might help you move towards a way of living that feels more like your own.
2) Starting therapy
The Initial Consultation is an extended session of up to 75 minutes. We'll take a broad look at what is happening, when it began, what else may be contributing, what you've already tried and what you would like to be different.
It also gives us both an opportunity to consider whether working together feels right.
The Initial Consultation lasts up to 75 minutes, compared with a 50-minute ongoing session.
No. The Initial Consultation is a standalone consultation and there is no obligation to continue into psychotherapy afterwards.
If we decide to work together subsequently, my ongoing psychotherapy is weekly rather than fortnightly or ad hoc.
No. I work with a small number of clients and don't operate a waiting list.
If I don't currently have an appropriate space available, I'll let you know rather than asking you to wait for an uncertain period. When someone is looking for therapy, I think it is important that they remain free to find the right support at the time they need it.
3) Ongoing psychotherapy
Ongoing psychotherapy takes place weekly at a regular day and time.
Your appointment is reserved specifically for you.
Ongoing psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes.
No. My ongoing psychotherapy is a weekly service because consistency and continuity form part of how I work.
Previous clients can, however, enquire about returning for a one-off session where appropriate and subject to availability.
Yes, for breaks of up to two weeks. I don't hold regular therapy appointments during longer breaks.Ongoing psychotherapy is offered on a weekly basis. I understand that occasional cancellations are sometimes unavoidable, but if sessions regularly become less frequent than weekly, we'll need to review whether the arrangement is still suitable.
If you decide to stop therapy and later want to return, you're very welcome to contact me, but I can't guarantee that your previous appointment — or another regular space — will still be available.
Your regular day and time is reserved specifically for you.
Because I work with a limited number of ongoing appointments, I'm not usually able to move a session to another time if you can't attend.
Your session will still finish at the agreed time.
For example, if your appointment is at 6pm and you join at 6.15pm, the session will still finish at 6.50pm.
You are free to end therapy whenever you choose. I ask for two weeks' notice so that we have time to bring our work to a thoughtful ending.
4) Online therapy
All therapy takes place online by secure video call, so you can attend from a private space that works for you.
You'll need a reliable internet connection and a private space where you can speak without being overheard or interrupted. I recommend joining sessions from a laptop or desktop computer rather than a phone where possible, as the larger screen makes it easier for us to see and respond to one another.
For some of our work, particularly when we're paying attention to bodily experience, it can be useful for me to see a little more than your face. You may therefore want enough space to position your device slightly further away when needed.
It can also be helpful to have a pen and paper nearby for anything you'd like to make a note of or bring into the session, along with a glass of water or a warm drink. And tissues are always useful to have within reach, just in case.
Please don't smoke, vape or drink alcohol during our sessions. Although joining therapy from home can naturally feel more informal than coming into a therapy room, I ask that we treat the session itself in much the same way as we would if we were meeting in person.
If your connection drops, the first thing to do is try reconnecting. If your home internet isn't working, you may be able to reconnect using your phone's 4G or 5G connection instead.
If the connection is unstable, turning off video can sometimes help. If we're unable to maintain a reliable online connection, we can usually continue the remainder of the session by telephone.
If technical problems at your end mean that you join late, have to leave early or are unable to attend, the usual fee still applies. As your regular weekly appointment is reserved specifically for you, I'm not usually able to move the missed time to another point in the week.
5) Therapy fees and returning therapy clients
Ongoing psychotherapy is £80 for a regular weekly appointment.
Your regular weekly appointment is reserved specifically for you. If you need to cancel a session, please give more than 48 hours' notice. Sessions cancelled with 48 hours' or less notice are charged at the full session fee.
I understand that occasional absences are sometimes unavoidable. However, ongoing psychotherapy is offered weekly, and if sessions regularly become less frequent than this, we'll need to review whether the arrangement remains suitable.
I don't currently offer concessionary or reduced-fee places.
Yes. If we've worked together previously, you can contact me about returning for a one-off 50-minute session without completing another Initial Consultation.
Returning-client sessions cost £95 and are subject to availability.
Ongoing clients make a regular commitment to weekly psychotherapy, and the monthly fee reflects that ongoing arrangement.
One-off returning-client sessions are offered separately, without an ongoing commitment, and are therefore priced at a different rate.
6) Who I work with for Therapy
I offer one-to-one online psychotherapy for women aged 18 and over.
I don't offer couples therapy, family therapy or therapy for children and young people.
You don't need to know before you enquire.
The enquiry process gives me some initial information about what brings you to therapy and what you're looking for. I'll then contact you for a brief conversation so that we can consider whether I may be an appropriate person to help.
If I don't think I'm the right practitioner for what you need, I'll tell you.
7) Supervision and how I work
I see supervision as a collaborative thinking space rather than somewhere I tell you what to do.
We will pay attention to ethical responsibilities, safety and professional standards, while also thinking together about your clients, the therapeutic relationship and your own responses to the work.
I may bring theory, experience or another perspective into the conversation, but I won't assume that I know your client better than you do. My aim is to help you think more deeply and clearly about your work, rather than practise more like me.
I work with counsellors and psychotherapists whose practice is broadly relational, integrative, somatic or solution-focused.
I only supervise areas of practice that fall within my own experience and competence. I don't therefore offer supervision for work primarily based in modalities I don't practise, such as CBT, or for work with couples, children or young people.
If you're unsure whether your practice falls within my scope, you're welcome to enquire.
No. You don't need to practise in exactly the same way I do.
I'm comfortable working across different perspectives and don't expect supervisees to adopt my way of thinking. What matters is that there is enough overlap in our approaches and areas of practice for me to supervise your work competently and for our conversations to be useful to you.
8) Starting supervision
The Chemistry Session is a 60-minute online supervision session and costs £85.
We'll talk about your practice, what you're looking for from supervision and any professional requirements you need to consider. You're also welcome to bring clinical work, so that we can begin thinking together and get a genuine sense of what it might be like to work together.
At the end, we can decide whether we'd like to arrange ongoing supervision.
No. The purpose of the Chemistry Session is partly to find out whether we're a good fit.
There is no obligation to continue afterwards, and either of us may decide that another supervision arrangement would be more appropriate.
Potentially, yes. This depends on the requirements of your training provider and professional body.
Different courses have different requirements about who can act as a clinical supervisor, so if you're in training, you'll need to check the specific supervisor requirements for your course before we agree to work together.
If you're unsure, we can discuss this when you enquire.
9) Ongoing supervision and practicalities
This depends on your practice, professional requirements and what you need from supervision.
If we decide to work together, we'll agree a frequency that is appropriate for your circumstances rather than assuming the same arrangement will suit everyone. You'll also need to make sure that your supervision arrangements meet any requirements set by your professional body, employer or training provider.
Supervision sessions are a minimum of 60 minutes and cost £80 per hour.
Longer sessions are available and are charged proportionately. We can agree the length of your sessions according to your practice and supervision requirements.
If you need to cancel or rearrange a session, I ask for at least 48 hours' notice. Sessions cancelled or rearranged with less than 48 hours' notice are normally charged at the full fee.
Payment is made by bank transfer at least 24 hours before each session. If I need to cancel, you won't be charged and we'll arrange another time.
